Date: November 1st  2014

Location: Bahen Center for Information Technology, Downtown Toronto

What is this exposé about?

Ideas for the World Exposé is a one day conference for highschool students. The topic of sustainability is becoming increasingly prevailent - the state pf the world right now is not sufficient to sustain future generations. Climate change risks are augmenting at an unprecedented rate. Environmental discrution is posing a threat to our food security. Our political system is unable to confront these problems.

To solve these issues, we need radical ideas. These ideas need to change the way society is run and change our perspective on our very own roles in fighting for a sustainable future. How can our food choices save the world? How can we make our politicians more responsive to environmental damage. What is the role of sexism and discrimination in climate change? What cutting edge techonologies are we developing and researching to combat our increasing amount of food and plastic waste?  Register now and explore the diverse amount of workshops we're offering that may change your perspective of sustainability.

The Workshops:

Meet Ben: He is one of the many workshop leaders already confirmed for the conference.

Topic of Workshop: Anti-Oppression and Climate Activism: Why Climate Justice Needs Equity

" This workshop will discuss the intersection of anti-oppressive work and climate activism. Oppression, meaning racism, sexism, settler-colonialism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism, etc matters to climate activists for two reasons. First, it shapes who is hit first and worst by climate change. Second, oppressive systems poses serious questions about the world we want to build. This workshop will begin by educating participants about oppressive systems. It will then teach participants about how to integrate anti-oppressive practices in their lives and future climate activism."

UPDATE : 9/28/14

Meet Wing: Another confirmed workshop leader who will be discussing the role of politics in combatting climate change:

Wing Wo, a concerned citizen and parent, co-founded the Canadian Electoral Alliance (www.electoralalliance.ca) in November 2011 with Lynn MacDonald and John Bessai.

Concerned that Canada elected a majority government in 2011 with only 40% of voters, Wing promotes cooperation between the other parties to take back parliament in the 2015 election by tabling a bill in parliament that would enact Proportional Representation and bring in a comprehensive climate change action plan.

Wing and her group have coordinated three well-attended town halls featuring speakers from different political parties including Stéphane Dion, Elizabeth May, Craig Scott, Joyce Murray, Bruce Hyer, Linda McQuade, Peggy Nash, Carolyn Bennett, and Jim Harris; and events with professionals Nathalie Des Rosiers, Brian Tanguay and Kelly Carmichael on proportional representation. While climate change is a driving motivation of this group, they have emphasized the need of long-term democratic reform, so that our Parliament reflect the will of ALL Canadians.

Join to share her passion and how she continues her journey of engaging Canadians to get involved in getting climate action.

More Workshops:

Alice: Ever wonder how much garbage you throw out daily? Well if we asked ourselves this question more often, maybe  waste won't be such a huge problem today. In this workshop participants will learn all about waste and the dire inplications on it has on sustainability.

Stephanie: You are what you eat; but what exactly have you been eating? Our diets and the agricultural system we rely upon might not be as sustainable as you think. In this workshop participants will learn all about the faults of our current system of food production and changes necessary in the future.
